Greetings from one of the best hidden secrets in South East Alaska… Wrangell… Wrangell Island is located between Ketchikan and Juneau in the pristine and protected waters of the famous Inside Passage home to some of the best salmon runs in the entire state. Spectacular scenery, liberal bag limits, no crowds and convenient travel make Wrangell Alaska a must for serious fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Fly into Wrangell twice a day (morning or afternoon jet) onboard Alaska Airlines and depending on which flight you take, you could even fish the same day you arrive!!

Wrangell is home to all 5 species of Salmon throughout the spring and summer months. King Salmon peaks historically are mid-May to mid-June and our Coho start to show up mid-July through September. Pinks and Chums are from July 4th through the end of August. Sockeye are found amongst these fish at different times of the season. Fishing out of Wrangell enables you to be on the drag in a very short time. Some of the best fishing is about 15 minutes away! It is not necessary to endure the open ocean while fishing out of Wrangell which can cause the worst experience for even the most die hard fishermen.

Wrangell is well known for being the “gateway’ to the mighty Stikine River-the fastest free flowing navigable river in North America. One huge benefit of the having the Stikine in our back yard is that it attracts one the biggest King Salmon returns in the area. We are also privileged to have great enhancement programs to our King, Coho and Chum salmon stocks that help contribute to good returns year after year. Both Kings and Coho’s fall victim to a slow trolled “Timber Wolf” rigged herring or an Ace Hi Fly behind a Hot Spot flasher. Either rig produces bending rods and screaming drags for all fishermen-novice to experienced.

So, if you want to experience some world-class fishing in the plentiful waters of Alaska I recommend giving Wrangell a try. We have great lodging available in the form of B&B’s, lodges and a hotel all with their own flavor of Wrangell.

This is the time to plan, so come give us a try!
